In-transit fumigation of commodities with phosphides
The fumigation of cargoes loaded into vessels’ holds plays a key role in today’s international trade. Proper fumigation practices ensure that your cargo arrives in good condition at destination, through the prevention or elimination of food pests and insects. The best-known method to achieve this is by using metallic phosphides formulations, mainly aluminium phosphide and magnesium phosphide. In fact, phosphine gas, which is the resulting compound from these formulations, is the only accepted product by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Grain and Feed Trade Association (GAFTA) to carry out in-transit fumigations, that is, during the vessel’s voyage to destination.
